Chief Lighting Designer at Odessa Opera & Ballet Theatre chooses Selecon

Located on the edge of the Black Sea, Odessa was part of Catherine 2nd's Imperial Russia's drive for an all weather seaport. Built in the last years of the 19th century the new Opera House replaced an earlier theatre opened in 1810 but destroyed by fire. Designed by two Viennese architects, F. Gelner and H. Gelmer, construction was supervised by local Odessa architects and the result is a building recognised around the world for its beauty and acoustics.

The Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre is considered the star of the city. It was the first and the oldest among a great number of cultural institutions, which appeared in the city at the beginning of the XIX century. Having played home to the likes of Tchaikovsky, Rimskiy-Korsakov, Rakhmaninov, Pablo Sarasate and other famous composers who performed their works here and performers such as Shalyapin, Krushelnitskaya, Ruffo, and Anna Pavlova, the theatre is now home to a Ballet Company of fifty and an Opera Company of forty.

As part of an ambitious refurbishment programme Selecon has supplied some 265 luminaires, including Pacifics (80V and mains voltage light sources), Aurora Cycs and Groundrows, Arena and 1200 PCs and Fresnels, Acclaim Fresnels and Performer Followspots.

The chief lighting designer of the theatre, Vyacheslav Usherenko chose Selecon Pacifics for his theatre: "Thanks to their powerful light output which is an important feature for the illumination of a big stage such as we have at the theatre; the compact size of projectors, and also the effective heat management system which considerably assists to prolong a lamp's life."

Mr. Usherenko has spent his lighting career at the Odessa Opera House where he has been their principal lighting designer since 1985. His work with the company has been seen in many countries including: Italy - "The Orlean Virgo"; Belgium - "Boris Godunov"; U.K. - "Norma"; Ireland - "Aida" and "Swan Lake" in Switzerland.

This equipment is being supplied by Art-R, an Odessa based company serving the Ukrainian entertainment industry. The Selecon team is delighted and very proud that this illustrious theatre has chosen Selecon luminaires to light their future performances.
